And The Music Played On

By Kate Levy

Once, before there was order and harmony between all things, there were two men that roamed Earth. They were named Dave and The Great Burney. Burney was bored with life one day, though there weren't days back then, and decided to travel to the palace of Frage. Here, it is said that one will find the answers to all of life's questions. Burney asked Dave to come along with him but Dave was not the brave type and stayed home. So Burney set out on his journey alone.

As he walked along he came upon Tree and Land fighting. Since he was The Great Burney he had to stop and help them. Tree was tired of being wet and wanted to grow on Land's back, but Land was afraid that Water would follow Tree and come up on it's back and wash away the dirt that covered it. Burney thought about their problem for a while. Finally it came to him, he gave Tree roots to connect it to Land's back and to keep the dirt from being washed away. Both Tree and Land agreed that this would work, so Burney continued on.

He had walked only a little farther when he came upon Fruit weeping. Since he was The Great Burney he had to ask what was wrong.

"I am so lonely. I wish there were other fruit for me to talk to."

Burney thought about Fruit's problem, but he didn't know what to do. Then the Wise Voice told him. Burney gave Fruit seeds that would grow into other fruits. Fruit kindly thanked Burney and went on her way. Burney thanked the Wise Voice for its help. By this time Burney was very tired, so he stopped to rest.

He woke several hours later, fully rested. Burney, again, started on his journey. He was thinking about what he would find at the palace of Frage when Sun came up behind him and scared him.

"Sorry to scare you, but I need your help."

"Why me?"

"Because you're The Great Burney. And you are very wise. And-"

"Okay, okay. What do you want?"

"Well, I'm suppose to bring light to Earth, but I don't have enough for all of Earth, all the time."

Burney thought for a very long time. Finally, after consulting the Wise Voice, he told Sun that he would talk to the Gods of Earth and see if Earth could revolve around him. Sun thanked him.

Burney traveled to the center of everything, where the house of gods was. Here he asked the three gods of Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, if they would please revolve around Sun. They talked about it for a while. Finally Air spoke.

"We have decided that this would be a good, useful thing, and we wish you to tell Sun to come see us so we can work out the details."

Burney thanked them for their time and left to find Sun. Sun was waiting outside the house of gods for Burney. Burney told him what Air had said. Sun was very grateful and told Burney that if he ever needed anything to just call. Burney continued on his way.

A day later he came upon the palace of Frage. There was a big fence all around it, but it was beautiful. At the gate stood a shadow, yes, a shadow. Burney walked over to the shadow.

He asked it, "How do I get in?"

The shadow looked up, "You must answer me one question."

"Sounds simple!"

The shadow laughed, thinking that there was no way Burney would answer correctly. "If you could have anything, anything at all, what would it be?"

Burney knew right away. "I would want something that would make everyone happy."

The shadow was stunned. "Then, my good man, that is what you will find inside."

The gate slowly opened. Burney took a step into the palace yard, looking back at the shadow. The shadow nodded in approval. Burney cautiously walked to the building. The door opened. It was dark. He stepped inside. He looked around, there was a light coming from the next room. Burney slowly stepped into that room. On the ground there was a small, white mouse. It spoke.

"Are you The Great Burney?"

"Y-y-yes."

"I know of the journey you made to get here. I am very impressed with you. You are very unselfish and giving. For this I give to you the gift of music."

There before Burney an electric guitar and an electric bass materialized.

"What shall I do with these?" asked he.

"Take them and play music with them. This will make everyone happy."

Burney thanked the mouse and started on his way home. He was walking when he heard someone crying. Being The Great Burney he had to stop and find out what was wrong. He found a young girl sitting by a tree.

"Please sir, take me with thee. Wherever thou art going will be fine. I'm ever so lonely."

The Wise Voice told Burney to take her home, so he did. The girl and Burney continued on. When they got back to where Dave lived they were very tired and slept for a day, at least.

When they woke, Dave showed them what he had done in Burney's absence. He had built a drum set. Burney sat down at it and played, even though he didn't know how. Dave picked up the guitar and, like magic, played. The girl then picked up the bass and, though it took a while, played it. Together they made wonderful music, but everyone wasn't happy! Something was missing. Then it came to Burney.

"Wise Voice, come and sing with us." said he.

The Wise Voice came and sang, and they had a band. Moon heard the music and he loved it. Soon Moon revolved around Earth.

Then everyone was happy and the music played on.
